Azad Foundation Society Aligarh
Rehabilitation through Reduce • Reuse • Recycle
District Jail, Aligarh | 20-Day Skill Intervention | 60 Lives Impacted
Implemented by Azad Foundation Society
“We didn’t just recycle waste. We transformed the way it was seen.”
♻️ THE 3R MODEL IN ACTION
REDUCE • REUSE • RECYCLE
A 20-day rehabilitation intervention that turned discarded jail waste into useful products, creative assets and livelihood possibilities.
💡 THE INNOVATION
What if a discarded tyre could become furniture?
What if an empty oil canister could become a beautiful, useful product?
And what if transforming waste could also transform a person’s confidence?
That was the idea behind PUNARJANM.
Azad Foundation Society transformed discarded materials lying within the jail premises into functional, decorative and value-added products through hands-on skill training.
WASTE WAS NOT THE END.
IT BECAME THE RAW MATERIAL.
🚀 THE OUTPUT | WHAT WE CREATED
♻️ WASTE TYRES → FURNITURE
Discarded tyres were transformed into usable furniture and utility products, including sofa-style seating.
🛢️ OIL CANISTERS → BEAUTY + UTILITY
Discarded oil canisters lying in the jail godown were creatively redesigned into decorative and useful products.
🎨 WASTE MATERIAL → HANDCRAFTED PRODUCTS
Discarded materials were converted into creative, functional and aesthetically valuable products.
🏭 JAIL SPACE → GREEN SKILL LAB
The jail environment became a practical learning space where waste became a resource and rehabilitation became productive.
THE PROOF OF IMPACT
FROM TRAINING TO REAL-WORLD VALIDATION
PUNARJANM did not end with training.
At the completion of the programme, an exhibition of products created by the participants was organised.
The exhibition transformed the project from a training activity into a live demonstration of creativity, workmanship, sustainability and market potential.
A PRODUCT CREATED FROM WASTE RECEIVED REAL-WORLD RECOGNITION.
Shri Indra Vikram Singh, IAS, District Magistrate, Aligarh, appreciated the innovative products and placed an order for a sofa set for his official residence/lawn.
THIS WAS THE MOMENT:
WASTE → PRODUCT → EXHIBITION → CUSTOMER INTEREST → MARKET VALIDATION
For the participants, the message was powerful:
“WHAT YOU CREATE HAS VALUE.”
RECOGNISED BY SENIOR ADMINISTRATION
The initiative and exhibition received appreciation from senior judicial and district administration officials, including:
Dr. Babbu Sarang, HJS — District Judge, Aligarh
Shri Indra Vikram Singh, IAS — District Magistrate, Aligarh
Shri Kalanidhi Naithani, IPS — Senior Superintendent of Police, Aligarh
Shri Dinesh Nagar, PCS-J — ADJ
Shri Brijendra Kumar — Senior Jail Superintendent
Their appreciation highlighted the potential of combining:
PRISON REHABILITATION + GREEN SKILLS + WASTE MANAGEMENT + LIVELIHOOD ORIENTATION
🌱 THE 3R MODEL
REDUCE
Promoting responsible consumption and reducing unnecessary waste.
REUSE
Giving discarded materials a meaningful second life.
RECYCLE / UPCYCLE
Transforming waste into useful, attractive and potentially marketable products.
This was not sustainability as a slogan.
It was sustainability in action.
REHABILITATION THROUGH CREATION
PUNARJANM connects environmental responsibility with human rehabilitation.
Through the process of creating from waste, participants developed:
Creativity • Practical Skills • Problem Solving • Teamwork • Patience • Productivity • Confidence
The material changed.
The mindset changed.
The possibility changed.
PUNARJANM reflects the spirit of India’s focus on:
SWACHH BHARAT
Responsible waste management and cleaner surroundings.
MISSION LiFE
Encouraging sustainable lifestyles and responsible use of resources.
CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Promoting Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Repurpose and Recover rather than a simple “use and discard” approach.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Building practical capabilities that can support employability and livelihood.
PUNARJANM brings these principles inside the correctional environment.

THE BIGGER MESSAGE
A discarded tyre became furniture.
An oil canister became a useful product.
Waste became a resource.
A prisoner became a creator.
A 20-day training became a demonstration of possibility.
And that is the deeper meaning of PUNARJANM:
Nothing should be discarded without asking what it can become.
Not materials.
Not opportunities.
And certainly not human potential.
